Home Tests for Menopause

Home Tests for Menopause
Menopause, no doubt, is one of the most crucial phases of any woman’s life. Also known as ‘change of life,’ Menopause is common in every woman and indicates the end of her fertile life. This biological change brings many physical and emotional changes in women as well; the earlier you diagnose the better situation you are in to deal with it. Testing for Menopause not only helps you understand the changes in your body and behaviour, but also allows you to get the relevent treatment to manage symptoms such as hot flushes, insomnia, etc.
Menopause is, basically diagnosed by measuring hormones such as Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Estrogen, Testosterone, Progesterone and Thyroid hormones. Besides this, your doctor may also carry tests to check vaginal health and bone density. Monitoring symptoms is also a possible way to determine Menopause.
There are now home test kits available which measure FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) in your urine. These are TGA approved, highly accurate and can be used just like a pregnancy test.. FSH is the crucial hormone, which stimulates the ovaries to produce eggs. During periMenopause (the stage before Menopause), the ovaries produce extra FSH in response to the slowing down of egg production in the ovaries. This surge in FSH can be measured by such tests.
How to know if the FSH level is high?
1. The normal FSH level is 5 and 25 mlU/mL
2. If the level is higher than 25 mlU/mL, it can be periMenopause condition or the beginning of Menopause
3. If the FSH levels are higher than 50 mlU/mL, it indicates, you are already in Menopause phase
FSH tests have two different processes - Urine FSH test and saliva FSH test. Urine tests are considered to be the most accurate. The tests available in Australia are 99% accurate.. These tests should not be looked at isolation to determine Menopause, but it can provide you with sufficient information, if you have to see a doctor and go for other tests.
